Top Seven Mental Health Movies
In today’s post we are going to look at Mental Health Movies. Now there are a number of obvious choices when we are looking for an honest portrayal of mental illness on the big screen and a lot more movies that just hint at the mental health disorders the characters may be dealing with. In this particular list I am looking for an accurate portrayal of mental health disorders. This list of mental health movies is not ranked in any particular order. Already lets get going with today’s article
- Girl Interrupted
- One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
- Reign Over Me
- It’s Kind Of A Funny Story
- Prozac Nation
- Silver Linings Playbook
Girl Interrupted stars Winona Ryder and Angelina Jolie in a film that mostly takes place inside of a mental health institution. The movie which is based off of an autobiography of Susana Kaysen of the same name. The main character who attempts to take her own life ends up in a mental health hospital for eighteen months. Susana who is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder befriends another patient Lisa who the film refers to as a sociopath however she does not meet most of the criteria in the movie though she does in the book. What I like about Girl Interrupted as the portrayal of the mental hospital is pretty close to what I experienced during my own stays on the psych ward. There is a wide variety of characters with an assortment of mental health issues and the struggle the main character deals with is similar to the one I went through.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest
One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest may be the most famous mental health movie around and though it can easily be dismissed when comparing it to more recent movies in terms of accuracy one needs to be reminded of the time that this particular movie was set in. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is based off of a book by the same name by author Ken Kesey. The reason I actually like this film is that it reminds me of the journey that mental health treatment has taken since the 1960s. Through the use of Electro Convulsive Therapy and lobotomies which were both used heavily during this time period, remember at one time the doctor who invented the usage of lobotomies was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as this treatment was considered revolutionary at the time. Through the usage of using psychiatric medication was used to stop all sorts of behavior, many of which were not psychiatric at all. One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest is considered to be a classic and deserves this title. For those who have never read the book of the same name it is completely different from the movie as the viewpoint differs greatly.

Manic is an often overlooked mental health movie that deserves much more credit than it receives. Manic surrounds a group of teens who are placed in a mental health institute for their own safety and the safety of others. Though it is not absolutely clear of which mental health diagnosis the patients are dealing with for the most part it is an accurate portrayal of what takes place inside of a teen ward in a mental health hospital. From dealing with the pressures of being a teen, to dealing with parents and trying to figure out where they belong in the world. Manic does a good job showing how mental illness starts in young people and how it manifests over the years. Manic stars both Joseph Gordon Levvit and Don Cheadle.
Reign Over Me
Reign Over Me is another movie that was not given the credit that it deserves and it probably has to deal with casting Adam Sandler into the lead role. That being said I have never seen a movie that deals with the ins and outs of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder like Reign Over Me. The main character lost his entire family to the tragedy that was 911. Over the next few years he slowly falls apart and gets deeper and deeper into the trap of mental illness. When he meets an old friend they slowly start working towards the goal of recovery. Adam Sandler does an amazing job in this film and it should not be overlooked.

It’s Kind Of A Funny Story
It’s Kind Of A Funny Story is based off the book by the same name written by Ned Vizzini and it follows the story of a teenager who after contemplating suicide checks himself into a mental health hospital. Since the teenager ward is full or being repaired he is sent to an adult ward where he meets and interacts with a variety of patients who like him are dealing with depression. It’s Kind Of A Funny Story is actually a feel good movie for the most part even though it is dealing with a serious mental illness. This movie stars Keir Gilchrist, Emma Roberts and Zach Galifianakis

Prozac Nation is another mood surrounding the ups and downs of major depressive disorder and how it can bring total chaos to the person who is dealing with the illness and to those around them. Prozac Nation is based off of the book by the same name and was written by Elizabeth Wurtzel. The main character is a talented writer who heads off to Harvard with a scholarship in journalism. Shortly after her arrival the character soon begins to fall apart and is unable to stop her descent. Prozac Nation is a strong film with the main character portrayed by Christina Ricci and co-starring Michelle Williams.
